A focused and communicative relationship with his architect meant that Jim O'Rourke and his family could realise their dream, having purchased a stunning plot in Aberystwyth with extensive views of Cardigan Bay. Ambitious initial ideas of large glass panels were replaced with the finished design of much smaller windows, each carefully positioned to create different vistas of such a wonderful setting..
owners: Jim & Helen ORourke
location: Aberystwyth
style: Modern yet homely
best feature: The kitchen and the steam stove
As in many houses the heart of the home is the large family kitchen. Hand-built by local craftsmen using local timber, it offers a professional selection of the latest culinary equipment including a state of the art steam oven. The worktops are a practical mix of hardwearing Corian and sparkling granite.
Leading off from the kitchen, mini satellites of smaller living spaces have been created, each fulfilling its potential at different times of the day. One is a sunny conservatory complete with large balcony, another is cosier and better suited to evening relaxation.
Alongside the use of natural materials, strong colours inject vibrancy into the overall design. Rich reds add warmth to the living spaces and contrast with cool relaxing blues in the bedrooms.
Other key design features are the varying floor levels, high angular ceilings and a surround sound system which is so easy to plan into a new build.
The finished product is a classic example of good effective communication between client and architect resulting in a striking individual design that is, at the same time, practical and able to cope with the demands of a growing family.
