As Aled Sam says, you need courage and vision to set out on what Sarra Elgan and her fiancé are trying to achieve. After looking for a house for 6 months, they saw these farm buildings in the Vale of Glamorgan and decided that this was the place for them – even though they hadn’t originally been looking for a place to renovate.

Fact file
owners: Sarra Elgan
location: Colwinston
style: An old barn turned into a 21st Century home
best feature: At the moment, the milking parlour!

The building has a fantastic view in a quiet rural location. At the moment it’s a long L-shaped corridor, and after coming up with seven different designs the couple have decided what they want. When it will be finished they will have an open-plan home, with the kitchen leading through to the dining room and then to the main sitting room. This will have an enormous window, so that they can appreciate the superb views. Where the milking parlour is at the moment they will have a large hall, a bedroom, a bathroom and a lounge with a loft extension rising from it.
