The recently completed conversion of a collection of very dilapidated farm buildings in West Wales by Stifyn Parri has resulted in the creation of comfortable, unique and stylish accommodation. Like a good wine, Stifyn’s design has taken time to mature and there have been some significant changes in direction along the way. But the result has been well worth the effort.

Experts opinion

Perhaps the most striking and innovative addition has been the glazed walkway that connects two of the original buildings. Leading from the living accommodation, it provides a sheltered access into the master bedroom and en-suite. Nowadays, the boundary between the bedroom and bathroom is becoming increasingly blurred as the emphasis shifts towards creating a relaxing haven rather than strict functional spaces. The bath is increasingly being positioned in the bedroom, and this works exceptionally well in this instance as the bedroom also contains a seating area and large inglenook fireplace.

Stifyn should be congratulated on managing to fulfil all the necessary National Park building guidelines and restrictions. These regulations would have daunted most people but Stifyn has taken the bull by the horns and created some very clever and creative answers to the problems posed by the cowsheds.

Even though none of the buildings are large, Stifyn has managed to create a sense of space and serenity. Furnishings have been chosen for their texture rather than colour or pattern. Fluffy cushions and tactile suede rag rugs contrast with stone flooring and sleek chrome fittings. Ceilings have been left open to the eaves, again increasing the sense of space. The lighting throughout is clever, in the form of recessed uplighters in the glazed walkway and external paving, combined with long simple pendant fittings highlighting the lofty ceilings. This suggests that from the beginning lighting has been an important element for Stifyn. He has chosen muted earthy colours that complement the surrounding countryside, windows have been purposefully left unadorned and even the furniture choices mimic the clean lines of the new layout. Add the clever use of carefully positioned mirrors to reflect much needed light and again help create an illusion of space plus the wow factor of the ginormous chrome candelabra and generous use of candles and you have a contemporary, chic interior of which Stifyn may be justly proud.
