Structurally, the mill was in surprisingly good condition, as a strong roof had protected the internal workings. When Hefin started to plan the renovation, he had a blank canvas of three floors and no internal walls.
By experimenting and laying out lengths of timber, he was able to determine the layout that would satisfy his desire to create a 2 bed roomed home with, most importantly, a large open kitchen/dining/living space. These three distinct functional areas have been segmented with the use of dwarf boundaries such as the unusual raised brick planter that sits between the kitchen and the dining space.
The large kitchen has been beautifully equipped with gleaming granite worktops and a butlers sink. By using a local craftsman to design and build bespoke kitchen units it proved easy to incorporate all the specific needs and ideas that Hefin had. His choice of a removable chopping board and hidden storage in the base unit pilasters are good example of this.
Simple check curtains, a sunny yellow colour scheme and quarry tiling complete the country kitchen look.
Upstairs in the guest bedroom an old white iron bedstead contrasts with the lavender blue walls creating a fresh contemporary space. The use of chunky chrome towel radiators and traditional sanitary ware add further character to the bathrooms.
Hefin enjoyed sourcing all the furniture himself and has chosen to complement the vast amount of original woodwork with traditional seating and pine furniture, resulting in a warm and mellow home
