Bryn Eglur is 250 years old this year and is once again a cosy home, just as it was in years gone by. “The cottage had been empty since 1965 and it’s been asleep since then,” says Dorian. “It was interesting for me to come here and decide what I wanted to do with the place. I really wanted to keep it looking like an old cottage, and to keep as many of the original features as possible. The objective was to keep it simple and to use local craftsmen to do the work.”
Dorian has surpassed himself and the whitewashed cottage’s simple unaffected air takes you back to yesteryear, with the old beams, the huge chimney and traditional furniture all adding to its impact.
He’s worked hard to achieve his aim, and has spent hours researching the style of the original house and visiting places like the Museum of Welsh Life in St Fagan’s. But the research has been well worth it and the wicker chimney breast is certainly testament to that.
“I’ve enjoyed the journey but it has been hard at times. I’ve met so many interesting people on the way but the work never really ends,” adds Dorian.
