Looking back on the effort and hard work that they’ve put into creating their exquisite home, Rhys says “When you’re building a house that you think you’re going to be in for a long while, then you’re not in the mood to cut corners.” And it really has been a labour of love for Rhys and his wife Elen, as they have had to live in a caravan on-site for the last three years, while the house is being renovated.

Fact file
owners: Rhys & Elen Williams
location: Ceredigion
style: A restoration project that has been a labour of love
best feature: The stone hearth in the sitting room

The couple were looking for a rural house with character, set in a generous plot of land, and seeing as Elen was keen to move back to her native Ceredigion, this property was ideal ... except that the house needed to be virtually rebuilt from scratch! The walls were buckled, the windows were rotten and the whole house betrayed a lack of care over a number of years. However, as they renovated the house, Rhys and Elen sought to retain the house’s character and external dimesnsions.

Walking into the central hall, the lounge on the right hand side has a traditional, cosy feel, while the kitchen on the left has a more modern outlook. The lounge’s ceiling is low and the stonework on the walls stands out, particularly the curved wall where the television will be located. In contrast, the kitchen is light and airy, and full of modern features, save for the one stone wall which anchors the room.

Now the project is nearing completion, Rhys and Elen can look back with pride, knowing that they made the right decisions and have created something stylish and special.
