His stylish Victorian flat contains an impressive collection of classic art deco furniture, sculpture, clocks and art pieces, brought together from all over the world. Gwilym is a man who loves his things to be old, but old in itself is simply not enough. Any fixture, fitting or carefully selected piece of furniture must also be beautifully old in form and function.
Gwilym loves mixing and matching styles from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although he is firmly of the opinion his home is to be lived in and used by the family and not simply just for looking at, the flat houses pieces many art deco museums would be proud to exhibit.
Art Deco was a popular design movement from 1920 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior and industrial design, as well as the visual arts, fashion, painting, graphics and film. This movement was an amalgamation of many different schools of thought of the early 20th century, which combined to create a functional, elegant style which was seen as ultra modern.
Pride of place goes to an early Twentieth Century cocktail cabinet found in a Yorkshire second-hand store, which gained a starring role in the Julie Andrews film, Victor, Victoria! As if one brush with celebrity was not enough for one man, Gwilym also outbid one of the world’s greatest art deco fans, Madonna, when at auction he bought a beautiful dining room set with its own ice trough for oysters.
