Fleeing from the hustle and bustle of city life in Cardiff, the couple discovered this gorgeous, stone-built property with its huge, impressive open fires, thick wooden beams and original timber floors. As with all the best designs, the kitchen is the real heart of the home here with its simple, sage green cupboards, pretty floral curtains, big refectory table – for family and social soiress – and smooth slate flagstones underfoot.
Likewise, the living space is a cosy, cocoon-like hub for hanging out, with huge, squashy sofas, tobacco brown floorboards and the flames of a real flickering fire glowing in the background. There is a lovely, laid-back rhythm to this house with its combination of natural materials, solid furniture and pale, soothing hues and, of course, the stunning views glimpsed from every window.
Upstairs continues in the same tempo, where bedrooms are furnished simply and honestly and Llywelyn’s space is crammed with toys, books and everything that goes into making a little boy’s den.
But it is the imposing open fireplaces and the mellow, ever-present radiance of the candlelight that adds an extra special touch to every nook and cranny in this house Yes, this is a home that really draws you, wanting to keep you there day after day.
