This huge bungalow covers two plots, including a corner plot, but with its unique design by Welsh-Argentinian architect John Humphreys, it fills the space gracefully. Inside, the rooms flow into one another, and Aled feels himself drawn to the enormous open lounge, which has plenty of room for friends to relax and doors leading out into the garden.

Fact file
architect: John Humphreys
location: Trelew, Patagonia
style: A house which is “over the top”, according to the architect
best feature: The ceiling in the lounge which twinkles with little halogen lights

The lounge has a number of eye-catching features, most notably the huge sitting space underneath a ceiling lit up by dozens of small lights. Aled says that this looks like something from the Starship Enterprise ! John explains that the area is sunk down so that the guests’ eyes are level with the garden, so they feel that the garden is part of the lounge.

John says that the most important room in an Argentinean house is the kitchen / dining room, and the key feature here is the asado – a vital component in any Argentine house. This is the meat grill, large enough to accommodate the whole animal, because Argentine meat-lovers never do anything by halves!

This project has become something of a labour of love for John, who has been oversseing the building for over a decade. He’s been responsible for every aspect of the bungalow, and one can see straightaway that the quality of the build reflects John’s attention to detail. In fact, very little has changed in the plans from John’s original vision, and as he relinquishes control and hands the keys over to the property’s owners, he confesses to a feeling of sorrow. This hasn’t been a cheap house to construct, but one can see exactly where the money has gone.
