Not too far away from Trelew, pitched in the middle of a cherry orchard, stands one of John’s most striking creations: a timber-built house perched on stilts. It looks like a cross between an earthy African safari lodge and a chic, modern-day cottage. As John admits himself, it is a far cry from his original designs, and here he expertly blends the old with the modern, the old-fashioned with the contemporary.
For despite the use of very traditional, honest materials, the style is very fresh and radical, yet also entirely natural as it blends seamlessly with the surrounding trees. Inside the dwelling, there is just one big space – a bedroom in the corner while the rest opens up to the lounge. And the dimensions are modest to say the least, but the owners wanted a small house which to use for a few days at a time during the summer months.
But it is the spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, which wrap around the structure that transforms this into a striking place to live. Stepping out on to the large balcony, the appeal of this property with its breathtaking views of the countryside is glaringly obvious. This is John’s vision of what it is like to be at one with nature…and doesn’t it look good.
