Strumble Head is the epitome of modern rustic chic.
Hedydd and Edward Hughes have successfully taken a series of old stone-walled cottages and gradually transformed them into a twenty-first century family home which works amazingly well on an aesthetic and practical level. Initially an empty space, the couple carved up the existing building to give them three sizeable bedrooms, a gorgeous, expanse of a kitchen (complete with wooden beams recycled from the original mill) and two living areas.
The backdrop is fittingly pale, neutral and tranquil, while furnishings are a simple blend of old and new. Floors are either stone flags or wooden boards while the rough, undulating walls have been whitewashed to instil a sense of light and airiness. The look is warm, natural and unpretentious, and is testimony to the Hughes' hard work and determination over the past eight years.
Strumble Head is characterful and homely, and just by the way the Hughes' talk about it, you can tell, that this is a real labour of love.
