The presenter - Since 2000, Aled Samuel has been travelling around Wales, meeting a wide variety of people and exploring their houses. Although he's covered a lot of ground and knocked on a huge numbers of doors, he's still enjoying it as much as ever.

“It’s great to talk to the owners, and to find out how they went about personalizing their homes” he says. “It’s fascinating to explore what influences each individual’s choice of style and décor. I’ve discovered so many examples of fantastic interiors, and in so many cases the house on the outside revealed nothing of what we could expect inside. I can tell you we’ve got some real surprises coming up in this series, where the owners have let themselves follow their imaginations, and come up with some real masterpieces.”

Aled believes the strength of 04Wal is that it's never contrived or pretentious. “We'd never tell you what's fashionable in the world of interiors or showcase homes that shout out how much money has been spent on them. Every house is different, and as unique as its owner. Each individual’s home reveals something of their personality, telling you some fascinating details about what they think and like.

This means that we don’t just focus on the outward appearance of these homes, but also look a t the insights they offer into the owners’ way of life. We can see examples of this in the items that look at the homes of two collectors of art deco furniture. Walk into the homes of both Gwilym Roberts in Penarth and Phil Jones in Ceredigion and you are transported back into the sumptuous styles of the 1930s. I left like I was stepping back in time into my grandmother's parlour! These individualistic homes were full of unusual pieces from the period, which reflected the owners' playful sense of humour. My favourite was an enormous cocktail cabinet with a colourful history in Gwilym's flat that just dominated the room.”

This new series will feature some houses that have been lovingly crafted by the owners, as Aled recalls with enthusiasm. “One house that was a pleasure to visit was the restoration of a Pembrokeshire farmhouse by Griff Rhys Jones. This collection of old buildings, ranging in age from a venerable old farmhouse, through extensive Georgian additions to a 20th Century extension, were lovingly restored to make a tasteful, unified home, that looks like its come straight out of a painting by John Knapp Fisher. Then there’s the farmhouse home of Rhys and Elen Williams, out in rural Ceredigion, which has been a labour of love for them to restore. They’ve been living in a caravan on site for ages, and it’s only now that their dedication is paying off and they can enjoy their hard work.

“We’ll be featuring all sorts of houses – old and new, large and small, traditional, modern or wacky. Some of the most fascinating transformations in the new series are small, homely conversions, such as that of Shelagh Hourahane. She lives in an old barn, that has been extended to take advantage of the location's wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, so that it's now a wonderful place to relax and meditate.”

A native of Port Talbot, Aled now lives in Llandeilo in a Georgian house. “But you won’t catch a film crew anywhere near my place!” he laughs. “After going round so many other people’s houses, I don’t think it would be fair to feature my home on the programme. It might not compare with some of the great places we’ve been and it would leave me too open to criticism. But then again, when we get to the final item in the final programme of the last ever series of 04 Wal, maybe – just maybe – I’d let the cameras in!”
