Countdown of top catchphrases

The catchiest sayings in Welsh language entertainment will provide an hour and a half of fun on S4C on New Year's Day.

The programme 40 Uchaf Siart y Dywediadau (Top 40 Catchphrase Chart), presented by Aled Samuel, will be an opportunity to celebrate some of the most memorable creations from the world of Welsh entertainment over the last 50 years.

Archive comedy

As well as showing clips from Welsh classics such as comedies C'mon Midffild and Torri Gwynt, classic entertainment show Ryan a Ronnie and children's programme Miri Mawr, a number of Welsh stars appear in the programme, including Dewi 'Pws' Morris, Dai Jones, Caryl Parry Jones, Hywel Gwynfryn and Tudur Owen.

Following the countdown of the most popular sayings, there'll be a chance to see the classic programme that made the top catchphrase famous.

Catchphrases

Aled Samuel says, "These catchphrases are part of our upbringing and our cultural history. They relate to particular periods in our development and remind us of events in our lives. They act as triggers and we can almost remember what we were doing when we first heard them."

"This was not a scientific or academic exercise," adds producer, Geraint Ellis of production company, Cwmni Da.

"But there was a long process of researching, with contributions from a number of the performers, writers and producers who take part in the programme as well as members of the public who also make an appearance.
