Mark Evans: Llanrhaeadr a Llundain

S4C follows a year in the life of Wicked star Mark Evans

It's been a busy year for performer Mark Evans. He's played the part of Fiyero in the West End show, Wicked, starred in S4C's children's series Marcaroni, presented on BBC Radio Cymru and released a new album.

Now, in a special programme, Mark Evans: Llanrhaeadr a Llundain on Thursday 29 December, we will step behind the scenes with the West End star.

"I agreed to film this documentary to show the public that working within the performance industry can be hard at times," says Mark, who left his home in Llanrhaeadr aged only sixteen in order to follow a performing career in London.

"The cameras followed me everywhere and there are some intense, raw moments during the programme when I get emotional because I'm missing home. It's an opportunity for people to get to know me better, and to get an insight into my busiest year ever."

The programme follows Mark as he records his first (bilingual) album, plays one of the leading roles in the West End show Wicked, and organises his initiative 'West End in Wales' for the fifth year running.

Mark began the north Wales summer school to give young people who shared his ambitions, that all-important first experience of performing a stage show.

Mark says, "Every a year a crew of 10-18 year olds have the chance to work with me and other professional performers in order to develop skills and create contacts for the future. I want to show them that anything is possible."

We'll hear how Mark battled against the expectations of a stereotypical Welsh community as he sang and danced instead of playing rugby or football. He had his heart set on fulfilling his dream of performing on a West End stage.

"Some call me the 'Welsh Billy Elliot', and to be honest it's quite an accurate depiction. For some reason the little lad from Llanrhaeadr decided to move to London to follow his dreams, and now I couldn't imagine doing anything else," he adds.
