Rhydian

It's been a roller coaster year for Rhydian Roberts, the 25 year-old singer from Powys, following his success on talent show, X Factor.

Although he was runner-up in the final of the series in 2007, his progress since and his public popularity have proved that as a performer, Rhydian is second to none.

The S4C documentary Rhydian follows the singer as he records his first album in London, Los Angeles and Stockholm and as he performs in major events, including the Grand Slam Concert at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium last May.

He'll also be seen returning to X Factor to sing in one of the programmes in the new series and, in contrast, we'll see him relaxing at home with his parents in Sennybridge in the Brecon Beacons.

After signing a contract with Simon Cowell, one of the X Factor judges, to record his first album on the Sony BMG label, Rhydian has been working with top international producers. The album ‘Rhydian' was launched at the end of November and all the excitement of the launch is covered in the programme.

Music moguls, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh along with pop star, Danii Minogue, three of the judges who were supportive of Rhydian on X Factor, will take part in the programme and talk about Rhydian's success over the past year.

"Danii and I are really good friends. We speak on the phone once a week. I am going to Australia to stay with her and Kylie next year," says Rhydian.

As a youngster, Rhydian had to choose between two possible careers - as a rugby player or as a singer. He was captain of rugby at Llandovery College and, at one time, had set his mind on playing professionally for the Ospreys.

"When I was a youngster, I wanted to play for Wales," says Rhydian. "Unfortunately, I injured my leg badly and I lost a lot of my speed. Following the injury, I got a lot of pain in my leg when I played rugby and it took much of the enjoyment away."

So singing won the day and the programme shows Rhydian as he achieves a great ambition - to see his first album launched.

Singing at the Millennium Stadium was just one of the unforgettable high points of the past year for Rhydian.

"There have been many highlights, to tell the truth," he says. "I met Prince Charles back in June after performing at a Prince's Trust event - that was special. It was also great to perform at Andrew Lloyd Webber's 60th birthday concert."
