31 January US Congress passes 13th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting slavery
3 February An attempt at peace, with a meeting between Lincoln and deputy President of the Confederacy Alexander Stephens, but this fails. By this point, the South has only two armies: Lee in Petersburg and Johnson in North Carolina
4 March Lincoln sworn in
25 March Lee's last attempt to attack Grant's forces - fails after four hours
2 April Petersburg falls
3 April Richmond, headquarters of the South, falls, the US flag is raised once more
9 April General Lee lays down his arms in Appomattox
14 April Lincoln shot at Ford's Theatre,Washington, by John Wilkes Booth
15 April Lincoln dies, his deputy Andrew Johnson takes over
18 April General Johnston's army surrenders - the war effectively over
4 May Abraham Lincoln buried at Springfield, Illinois
