The documentary series 'Cymry Rhyfel Cartref America' (The Welsh and the American Civil War) gives us a fascinating insight into one of the most important periods in American history: an era that was both bloody and exciting, and which could accurately be described as a second American revolution. The events of the Civil War were largely responsible for forming the powerful country that we are familiar with today. Many of the unresolved tensions of the Civil War resonated through the 20th Century, with many of the questions that were raised during this turbulent time still being a cause for debate. What is significant about these three programmes is that they look at this period through the eyes of the Welsh who had settled in America, and who were caught up in the warfare. Almost all of the Welsh participants fought for the North, battling for the future of the Union. As most of these soldiers were literate, they wrote first-hand accounts in Welsh in their diaries and letters home, describing the realities of life in the front-line. Many of these writings were published in the Welsh-language newspapers that were numerous both in Wales and the USA. The newspapers of the period provide a compelling account of the events that took place, but the letters and diaries of those young men from Wales who took part are even more fascinating. We've included some of their accounts in these pages, to illustrate some of the major events of the war.
