From the end of the eighteenth century onwards, a number of slaves who had escaped slavery published their autobiographies. These accounts are now considered to be the beginnings of Afro-American literature.
But in the 1930s, some 2300 ex-slaves were interviewed like the above four, to record the memories of the last generation of black Americans who had lived as slaves - before they disappeared forever.
These accounts have an oral quality to them, completely different from the earlier biographies, but they are essential reading for those who wish to learn about the experience of living as a slave.
