Blodau

Lili blooms in Llandudno

There's a continental feel to new S4C drama Blodau (Flowers), filmed on location in the popular seaside resort of Llandudno.

The series follows three friends, Lili, Cat and Paul.

Lili is an artistic person with her own unique style. She lost her mother at a young age and has always looked after her father and brother, helping run the family's fruit and veg business. But in the first episode, Lili's father, Siôn remarries and goes on an extended honeymoon. For the first time, Lili has the freedom to make her own decisions, and one particular decision will lead her on an interesting creative journey.

From stage to screen

Lili is played by 27-year-old actress Rhian Blythe, from the village of Llandwrog near Caernarfon. This is Rhian's first major role in a television series.

"Up to now, I've worked mainly in the theatre," explains Rhian, who won the Best Actress award at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, for her role in the powerful play, Deep Cut.

In the series, Lili and her friend, Cat (Sara Lloyd Gregory) venture to the world of floral design. Cat is the business head, while Lili is responsible for creating fantastic floral arrangements. This is a completely new world for Rhian, but she's been greatly inspired by the work of the series' flower expert, Sioned Rowlands.

Flower master

Sioned, from Bodfari in Denbighshire, was runner up earlier this year in the Florist of the Year competition. She presents items on S4C's gardening lifestyle series, Byw yn yr Ardd, runs her own wedding floral design company and also lectures at Northop Horticultural College.

"I've enjoyed working on Blodau very much," says Sioned. "It's been hard work! The main problem was keeping the flowers fresh during filming. Flowers wilt, of course, and sometimes we had to rush out to buy some new flowers. The local florist shops have been a great help."

Rhian adds, "Sioned is great. She does all the work and as Lili, I get all the praise!"
