Twenty-year-old Rowena is a former student of Coleg Menai, Bangor, and is currently studying at at Chelsea School of Art, London. She lists Tracey Emin and C Y Twombly among her favourite artists and is a native of Caernarfon. The castle is close to her heart and she chose to do her preparatory sketching within the castle walls looking out at very traditional views across the Menai Strait while using the crumbling castle walls as a frame for her work.
Her finished work, however, owes nothing to tradition. Being a young artist, she still experiments with different media and ways of working. In her interpretation of Caernarfon Castle she uses stones from the shores of the Menai, Welsh wool, melted wax and other materials all on the background of an old duvet. She chose to use materials from her home and surroundings so the viewer would focus on it being a local castle important to her area.
Explaining her train of thought, Rowena said: "The duvet gives me more depth than a canvas, it has more loose material and so the wax in the folds gives a good reflection of the clouds. The castle is very dear to me but is seen in a serious light by some people so I wanted to give it a slightly humorous side." Rowena visited the castle mainly as a child and so wanted to get rid of the politics that surrounded it and get people to appreciate it and its surroundings as the beautiful place that it is, as she did so when she was younger.
