Gwilym Prichard, who in recent years, with his wife, fellow artist Claudia Williams, has lived and worked mainly in Brittany often interprets the sea and coastline in his pictures. Gwilym, originally of Llanystumdwy, Gwynedd, works on his Oystermouth picture, both from a sailing boat in the Bay and at his Tenby studio in Pembrokeshire.
Gwilym's oil on canvas develops in a different way to Harris' original, which focuses largely on the ships, for whose owners he often painted on commission. Gwilym has concentrated on depicting the sea, the sky and the landmarks of the modern bustling holiday seaside town of Oystermouth.
Gwilym explains, "James Harris' main interests were the ships and he recreates all their fine details magnificently. Ships and boats don't really interest me because you need an enormous amount of time to capture them, because of the turning tide or changing winds. But having been out on the sea sketching, my interest lies in the contrasting shades and colours of the sea and the darker-looking sky and the highly striking clouds."
Gwilym’s new works will be exhibited to the public as part of a travelling art exhibition.
