Programme three features two Welsh artists taking a fresh look at a classic nineteenth-century oil painting, ‘Oystermouth from the Sea’, painted by Swansea artist, James Harris.
Gwilym Prichard and Catrin Webster take Harris’ work as the inspiration to create their own paintings of the scene. Presenter Osi Rhys Osmond, looks at the background to this striking picture and follows the two artists as they work on their paintings, on location in Swansea Bay and in their studios.
The original oil on canvas seascape ‘Oystermouth from the Sea’ was painted by James Harris (Senior) (1810-1887) in 1860. Now at Swansea Museum, the picture is a panoramic view of 19th century Oystermouth, with All Saints Church and Christadelphian Chapel - but strangely not the famous castle - the notable landmarks. The sea is rough, but half a dozen or more vessels, which Harris details meticulously, are sailing.
