Cân i Gymru 2009 Judges
Here are the people who hold the power in this year's competiton! The fate of the composers is in their hands - who will they choose?
Owen Powell
Owen Powell is well-known as the guitarist from Catatonia, but he started his musical career in the band Crumblowers as a teenager. Owen composes for film and television and he's a familiar face on S4C. He has also composed for the singer Duffy. Owen is the Musical Co-ordinator for Cân i Gymru.
Margaret Williams
Following a number of years of competing on large and small stages around Wales, Margaret Williams won the Blue Riband Singing competition at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1964. That was the start of a glittering career for the singer from Brynsiencyn in Anglesey, who has become such a familiar face to S4C viewers, and a 'national treasure'.
During her career, Margaret has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world, including the late Ryan and Ronnie, and Ronnie Hazlehurst who died last year. Cân i Gymru is very close to her heart as Margaret was the first winner of the competition when it started forty years ago in 1969.
Dyl Mei
Dylan Roberts, or Dyl Mei as he's known, is a producer from Porthmadog who's worked on records for bands such as Texas Radio Band and Pep Le Pew. He works at Blaen-y-Cae studio in Garndolbenmaen and was one of the founder members of rap band Genod Droog. He also runs his own record label, Slacyr Records. Dyl is a familiar face to S4C viewers as he regularly appears on programmes such as Uned 5 and Bandit. He has also presented a programme on BBC Radio Cymru, Hen Bethe Crwn with Huw Evans, which was recommended by Harvard University.
Gwyneth Glyn
Singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn was born in Bangor and educated in Pwllheli and Oxford. She has released two albums, Wyneb dros dro (2005) on the label Slacyr and Tonau on her own label Recordiau Gwinllan. Gwyneth is also well-known as a poet, and she was Welsh Children's Laureate 2006-7.
Kelly-Marie Angell
Kelly-Marie has been following Cân i Gymru for many years; therefore she was very keen to play a part in the competition which has meant so much to her. She is a keen singer herself; a member of Cardiff choir CF1, and teaches singing at the 'Performers' theatre school in Roath in Cardiff. Kelly comes from Nelson originally and attended school at Rhyd-y-Grug and then Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. Kelly has a degree from Portsmouth University in Music and Music Technology. This led to a career as a sound editor, during which she's worked on programmes such as Torchwood and Dr Who.
Aled Myrddin
Aled Myrddin from Machynlleth is a PE teacher at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi. He was educated at Ysgol y Garnedd and Ysgol Tryfan. Aled was the 2008 Cân i Gymru winner, with his song 'Atgofion' ('Memories'). He says that the song is about the way that memories fade with time and the importance of making a note of them in some form or another so that they may be preserved for the future.
Rhydian Roberts
X Factor star Rhydian started singing as a boy soprano, aged just three. Later he received classical training at Birmingham Conservatoire. Following his X Factor success he was signed by Simon Cowell, and released his first album on 22 November 2008. It went platinum in early January 2009.
