Cyngerdd Cymry'r West End

This year, a touch of West End glitz and glamour came to the National Eisteddfod of Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys, and now S4C viewers can enjoy the razzmatazz of this special evening.

The 'West End stars from Wales' evening saw some of Wales's most experienced and successful performers in West End musicals returning to a stage where many gained their first performing experience.

We can enjoy performances by John Owen Jones, Mark Evans, Gwion Jones, Tara Bethan and local girl Katy Treharne from Nantyglo, Ebbw Vale. Katy is currently among the cast of the world-famous musical Phantom of the Opera at the Her Majesty's Theatre, London.

John Owen Jones, from Burry Port, has a wealth of experience in the West End and Broadway. He recently appeared as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. He's won acclaim in the role of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and was also a guest on the S4C series Shân Cothi.

Mark Evans, of Llanrhaeadr near Denbigh, shot to fame on the BBC series Your Country Needs You, competing for the chance to represent Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest. Mark finished third in the competition, and his career has gone from strength to strength. He recently appeared in the musical Oklahoma! and the stage production of the Disney film High School Musical.

Gwion Jones and Tara Bethan both found fame beyond Wales on the BBC series I'd Do Anything which searched for performers for a new production of the musical Oliver!. Gwion was selected to take on the role of Oliver, and although Tara was not selected to play Nancy, she won praise from the judges. Since the programme she has taken on the role of the narrator in the musical Joseph.
