This year, Welsh composer Gareth Glyn celebrates his sixtieth birthday. S4C will broadcast a concert marking this milestone in his life which gives us the opportunity to enjoy and marvel at his musical talent.
Some of our most talented musicians and singers come together on the stage of Prichard Jones Hall in Bangor to present a variety of his compositions. Amongst the performers are Catrin Finch, Fflur Wyn, Jeremy Huw Williams, Anglesey Youth Choir, Beaumaris Band, Aelwyd yr Ynys Choir, Cefin Roberts, Ysgol Glanaethwy and John Eifion.
"Although I had been involved with the detailed preparations and rehearsals for the concert, and knew what was going to be happening on stage, being there on the actual evening in a full hall and seeing people on their feet applauding was a very emotional experience," says Gareth Glyn, who was born in Machynlleth, brought up in Mold and who now lives near the village of Bodffordd on Anglesey. "The feeling of appreciation really warmed my heart."
Gareth has also been busy recently working in his studio at his home on a double CD of orchestral work, Welsh Incident a gweithiau cerddorfaol eraill which is being released soon. Another familiar studio to him is the BBC studio at Bangor, of course, where he spends every weekday afternoon presenting the news programme Post Prynhawn for Radio Cymru in his own unique, fast and furious style.
After all this activity, he's now looking forward to enjoying a bit of a break.
"On my birthday at the beginning of July, I'll be on holiday with my wife, somewhere peaceful and far away!"
