Rhys Jones has had an immense influence on the music scene in Wales. His songs have been heard hundreds of times at concerts and eisteddfodau all over the country, and he's had a great influence on numerous composers and performers. Now his life and work are the subject of an S4C documentary, Gŵr y Gân.
We'll accompany Rhys as he visits old haunts and reminisces about his life. We'll also hear new arrangements of some of his memorable songs, sung by the close harmony group, the 405's, whose members include his daughter, Caryl Parry Jones, and his granddaughter, Miriam.
We'll also hear from musicians who have been influenced by him, including Islwyn Evans from Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion and composer Gareth Glyn.
"Making this programme has been a delightful experience, and a new experience after 30 years of broadcasting on radio," says Rhys, who comes originally from Trelawnyd, and now lives with his wife Gwen in Prestatyn. "It's been a nostalgic journey for me, and I did feel quite emotional at times.
"I enjoyed listening to the vocal arrangemenents of some of my songs. Listening to other people's interpretations of your work touches your soul. At the Urdd Eisteddfod this year, five of my songs were performed in different competitions. And hearing seven young male voice choirs on stage singing the song, 'O Gymru' was a wonderful experience."
Now at the age of 83, the documentary Gŵr y Gân has given Rhys an opportunity to look back over his life and career.
"It's been a long and full life, and also a life full of happiness. I can't think of any dark hours. The best thing I ever did was to marry Gwen. She has been such an influence on me."
