At first glance, there's nothing to differentiate Amy Williams from any other young mum in Port Talbot. But apart from wanting the best for her kids, 28-year-old Amy harbours two dreams. She wants to build on her part-time career as a catwalk model and, more controversially, she wants to become a boxer.
In this two-part S4C series, Ffeit Gyntaf Amy, starting Monday, 20 February, we follow Amy as she attempts to realise her dream of stepping into the ring and actually fighting.
Amy works as a Cover Supervisor for SkillWales, and in this first episode we see various sides to her personality. She works hard, is a doting mother and enjoys a day as a fashion model for one of Cardiff's photographers. But throughout it all, she trains hard, day after day, night after night, to accomplish her goal of becoming an amateur boxer.
"I've tried all kinds of sports - rugby, football, swimming, running, but I've stuck at boxing," says Amy who also enjoys modelling. "Fighting gives me a 'buzz', and taking part in my first fight will allow me to prove to myself how good I can be.
"Boxing, working and being a mother mean a lot of time and energy - and it can be difficult at times, especially when things don't go the way I planned.
"You'll see in the programme that I was so close to quitting boxing, because there was no sign of another female boxer to fight and felt I was wasting my time. But my family were there to support me every step of the way and that was a big help."
We'll meet the people closest to Amy, and hear their feelings towards her chosen sport including those who applaud her and those who are more hesitant.
This programme also offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of this hard, often ruthless sport. We discover the sense of community, discipline, fitness and excitement that is Welsh amateur boxing as we watch a young woman strive to find her place in it.
In the second episode next week, we see Amy's determination grow as she strives to hold her first fight in the ring, but her grandmother is concerned for her safety and fate itself seems to be against her. Will Amy finally achieve her goal?
