J. O. Roberts

In a special edition of Cofio, actor J.O. Roberts reminisces about his childhood in Liverpool, his time in the RAF and roles in some of Wales' most important plays and film productions.

Following the programme there's a chance to enjoy J.O's performance starring with Siân Phillips in an archive edition of the 80s series Mae Hi'n Wyllt Mr Borrow.

J.O. talks about the start of his acting career, and the first drama he starred in at 14 years old when he took on the role of Amlyn in Saunders Lewis' drama 'Amlyn ag Amig'. Since then he has performed in a wide variety of dramas and television films where he portrayed some of the nation's heroes, including Owain Glyndŵr.

"I have been very fortunate," he says, watching an archive clip of the 80s film Owain Glyndŵr. "It was an honour to portray a national hero, but the part also came with great responsibilities."

During the programme we see archive footage of J.O. portraying a variety of characters. These include his musical performance in Fiddler on the Roof at Theatr Gwynedd and a scene from the film Cysgodion Gdansk from 1987 where he plays a spy on the run in the Welsh countryside, thrown into the cold waters of Swallow Falls.

J.O. Roberts's children are also familiar faces as S4C presenters. Gareth is a sports presenter on Y Clwb Rygbi and Nia currently fronts the culture series Pethe and Pethe Hwyrach as well as her daily show on Radio Cymru.
