Perón's government stays in power for the first half of the decade, but another right wing takeover happens in 1955. By 1958, Chubut is declared a state in its own right, with its own police, courts and bank. The call came to build a dam to help the valley, but this didn't come into existence until 1965. The dam was a way of controlling the river and providing electricity for the valley, but it brought its own problems, namely the drying out of the land with excess salt deposits. By the end of the decade, the railway has shut down.
