Many books in both Welsh and English have been written over the years about Patagonia, including many autobiographical accounts from the past and more recent times. We've included some of the main titles here, with some still available to buy whilst others are available through various libraries. For more details of some of the Welsh-language books that are available to buy, go to www.gwales.com , but for the rest, the following university Libraries are a good starting point:

The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth

  Cardiff University Library

  Bangor University Library

In terms of the social and economic development of the colony, the two most useful studies are The Desert and the Dream (1975) and more recently, Welsh in Patagonia: The State and the Ethnic Community (1991), but maybe the most famous general history of the colony is Gwladfa Patagonia 1865-2000 (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, 2000), the most recent version of a book which was originally written R. Bryn Williams and is available in Welsh, English and Spanish. Hirdaith (Gwasg Gomer, 1999) a book by Elvey Macdonald, chronicles the early days of the colony in a thorough and exciting volume.

As mentioned before, many books about Patagonia have been written as autobiographical accounts, either by the people from the region or by visitors from Wales. One of the most famous is again by R. Bryn Williams, called Prydydd y Paith (1983), but it should be noted that many tales from the region are written largely by women. Two highly readable accounts have recently been re-published: Dringo'r Andes and Gwymon Môr (Honno, 2001) by Eluned Morgan, which recount the author's childhood but also adventures such as horse riding in the Andes or a sea voyage from London to Patagonia at the start of the twentieth century. Another set of more recent memories are presented by Valmai Jones in Atgofion am y Wladfa (1985), and an interesting biographical account by Marged Lloyd Jones called Nel Fach y Bwcs (1992). Another recent account of a year spent in the region was written by Cathrin Williams, Haul ac Awyr Las (1994).

In English, undoubtedly the most famous contemporary book written is In Patagonia (1979) by Bruce Chatwin, and a second volume of memoirs published posthumously and co-written with Paul Theroux, called Patagonia Revisited (1992) is available with illustrations by Kyffin Williams.

The artist Kyffin Williams has also published a book called Wider Sky (1991) which gives details of his trip to the region, including some sketches that he took. Another portrait of the region, this time through verse and prose, is offered by the poets Iwan Llwyd and Twm Morys in Eldorado: Llwybrau Dau i Le Diarth (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, 1999) as they travelled through various parts of South America.
