S4C celebrates 10 years of Wakestock

It's Wakestock's tenth birthday this year and S4C will be broadcasting three special highlights programmes from the festival, with special performances from Super Furry Animals and The Zutons.

This unique festival, held in the seaside town of Abersoch on the Llŷn Peninsula, combines the world of wakeboarding with the latest music headliners.

Sarra Elgan, Huw Stephens and Alex Jones will join in with the celebrations, enjoying the competitions in the sea during the day, along with the night-time musical entertainment at what is Europe's largest wakeboarding festival.

1 festival, 3 programmes

The first programme, presented by Sarra Elgan, combines the best of the wakeboarding at Pwllheli Marina and Abersoch beach with the electric atmosphere of the festival's three music stages.

Yr Ods, Noisettes, Pigeon Detectives, Gallops and Unicord Kid will also be seen on S4C's programmes from the event.

The second programme will see Alex Jones take a behind-the-scenes look around Wakestock to see how the festival is brought together.

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens will provide S4C viewers with a unique look at the festival in the final programme. This special episode allows the viewers to see the festival through Huw's eyes as he goes in search of the festival's musical highlights - from the Promatics to the Ods.

Are looking forward to Wakestock this year?

Yes, each year the festival grows, with so many visitors coming to Abersoch looking for a good time and to hear some great music. Credit needs to go to the organisers of Wakestock who always manage to create a memorable event.

Which bands are you looking forward to seeing?

North Wales band Yr Ods are amazing and after performing at Glastonbury they're going from strength to strength. I'm also looking forward to seeing Dizzee Rascal - he's the king of hip hop at the moment, belting out anthem after anthem. I'm sure the field will be full of Dizzee Rascal fans during his set.

What makes Wakestock special?

It has to be the location. It's like a postcard view looking out from Abersoch beach and the visitors love coming here year after year. Wales is a prime location for festivals of this sort and it's great that it's been going for so long.

You'll be DJ'ing at the festival. What sort of music will you play?

I'll be playing a mix of tunes that will get the crowd up and dancing to the beats!

Are looking forward to Wakestock this year?

I'm very excited - as someone who enjoys both water sports and music, it's a great way to spend the weekend.

Which bands are you looking forward to seeing?

There are so many bands that I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing - especially N.E.R.D, Calvin Harries and Dizzee Rascal. Welsh band Sibrydion are always fab when they sing live so they'll be worth seeing too!

Do enjoy watching the Wakeboarding?

The competition is always exciting, and there's a large following in the audience each year, not to mention the colourful characters that arrive from all over the world. The competition is as much a part of the entertainment as is the music.

But what makes Wakestock special?

Wakestock is completely different to other festivals - maybe it's the wakeboarding competitions or the people, the atmosphere or perhaps Abersoch itself. The organisers always manage to get the right mix of bands, performers and DJ's which is always a good thing!
