A pair of good fitting jeans
it's worth spending more on a good pair which will keep their shape. Bootleg if you have largish hips or are heavier on the top of your legs. Straight-leg if you have thin legs. Hipsters are great if you're not too big around your waist. Jeans with a high waist are more flattering for the older or heavier lady.
A blazer style jacket in cord, denim or tweed.
A blazer suits most shapes and can be worn during the day or for the evening.
A white or cream top
(depending on your skin tone) with a neck that suits your body shape. A round neck (usual t-shirt) suits ladies that have a small chest but a v-neck or straight across for a larger lady.
Tan coloured, natural leather calf-length boots
These will go with everything in your cupboard be it a skirt or a pair of trousers. Choose a pair that is appropriate to you - either a relatively high heel or flat if they are more practical. A kitten heel is one that suits everybody.
An evening top.
Not too shiny because it'll restrict where you can wear it. A silky material with perhaps, a little embroidery and sleeves if you prefer to hide your arms. A three-quarter sleeve is flattering allowing you to wear bracelets and show your wrists but will hide the bingo wings. Thin straps are attractive teamed with beads around the neck.
A smart pair of trousers
with the evening top during the evening or with the jacket during the day. Dark colours are best allowing you to combine with patterned or light coloured tops. Light coloured trousers do not suit if the bottom half is large but it is possible to combine them with a long top, which hides the bottom and top of the legs.
