As well as being a musician, choir and orchestra conductor, Alun Guy is schools music consultant and the Main Adjudicator for GCSE Wales. He's been on the music panel at the National Eisteddfod for 20 years and was Head of Music at Ysgol Glantaf, Cardiff between 1978 and 1998. He admits that his choice of clothing has changed as he's gotten older.

Alun on his image...

The image I put out hopefully is a modern one, neat and suited to the occasion. Of course, when I buy something I try to imagine how it will look in a pulpit, on the stage at the National Eisteddfod, if you're adjudicating on stage and people are giving you their undivided attention. In the music world you have to speak with authority. My father was a public man and he told me 'the first thing someone sees before you even open your mouth is your outfit, your stance, the way you carry yourself'.

Alun on expensive clothing...

I have a weakness for clothes, I confess that in front of the nation. I never ask the price - buy cheap buy twice is what I say. I like designer labels - Hugo Boss and so forth.

Alun on dressing for the occasion...

If I'm going out with a lady and taking her to dinner, I want to look smart, and I take a lot of time and effort over my appearance because it's a compliment to the person you're out with.

Alun on trends...

For me popular music stopped with the Beatles, nothing like them has been seen since. But what they also did was to shake society to its core with their outfits and I remember going to Carnaby Street and buy a kipper tie and my wife bought a full-length coat reaching right to the floor and when we arrived back home my mum and dad couldn't believe their eyes!
