Arfon Haines Davies is a familiar face on television and takes an interest in anything to do with the past. "As someone who lives in the past, anything that reminds me of then appeals to me, and I love having things around me. I don’t know where my interest in clothes came from, certainly not from my father. Even though my father was a well dressed man, he wasn’t the type to go out any buy shirts and cardigans."
Why do you like wearing suits?
I love wearing suits. I’m old fashioned and believe that wearing a tie with a suit looks much better than an open collar. I’m not a confident person, but I feel much more authoritative in a suit, which gives the illusion of confidence.
Where did this smart jacket come from?
Some of the suits in my wardrobe are older than a few of the S4C presenters! This jacket dates back to the early 1970s when I used to teach at Brynford primary school near Holywell. I could never throw this jacket away because of the memories; there may well be some chalk still in its pockets!
What’s the story behind these?
I like autumnal colours. I was filming in a wool factory in Trefriw, Conwy about seven or eight years ago. After we finished, I was looking at some fabric and some wool and they told me that I should buy a suit. It’s a waistcoat and jacket. They took my measurements and about three months later I got a call to tell me my suit was ready! This is the only jacket I own that my father liked. He always told me that he liked it, so this jacket means a lot to me.
Apart from fashion, what else interest you?
I have a great interest in trains and railways and I also love Hollywood, the 1930s, 40s and 50s – the golden era. Cary Grant always used to look dapper. I think Cary Grant is a bit of a fashion and style icon for me.
Has your style changed over the years?
I have been accused many times of being stuck in the 1970s with my fashion sense, that I still wear the same plastic glasses and have the same hairstyle. I think the 1970s must be my biggest influence!
How would you describe your style?
When I started broadcasting I remember my mum telling me: “dark suit, white shirt and a smart tie” – and I’ll do just fine. She also told me how important shiny shoes were – you can tell a lot from a person’s shoes. I don’t think that the fashion basics have changed that much since then.
This is a unique jumper, where did you get it from?
My mum used to knit me jumpers with these amazing patterns on them that were hard work to create. I used to wear them on the television. Some of them were so colourful that it took a lot of guts to wear them, so I must be more confident than I realise!
You have an amazing collection of ties. Where are they all from?
I like to wear a tie and I buy them too often! When I was on television viewers used to send me ties and I used to wear them on screen! But I think that ties are such a personal choice. I remember a few years ago there was a feature in the Wales on Sunday about the fifty most well dressed people in Wales, and I came in at number twenty seven!
