Arwel is an art director on films and programmes such as Dr Who and he has quite a lot of unique items in his wardrobe
Arwel: I’ve never liked being part of a crowd, like sheep following each other if you like. I’ve always liked to be different as far as clothes go.
Nia: Do you have any recollection of growing up in Llandwrog and liking clothes and fashion at the time?
Arwel: No, not that much really. I remember that I created a lot of bother for my poor mother. Most boys the same age as me were into football and used to wear ‘Pringle’ jumpers for example, the kind of clothes that I used to relate with older men. So I liked to wear a lot of black and my Grandfather’s old coat and waistcoat, anything to be a little different really instead of being part of a big crowd wearing the same boring old clothes.
Nia: What were your influences? Film stars, music, heroes?
Arwel: I don’t know to be honest with you. Film has been an overall influence on my life I’d say. Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved films more than anything else and that’s why I do the work I do today. The films I used to watch as a child have probably influenced my choice of clothes. There are a few items in my wardrobe that you wouldn’t see in anybody else’s wardrobes due to my taste in films.

Arwel: The best story about this is where I bought it – from a gift shop in Euro Disney! It was something that I’ve always wanted.
Nia: The sleeves lace-up, have you a pair of trousers that match too?
Arwel: I happened to have a black leather pair that went well with the shirt anyway. I don’t wear them as often these days, maybe I’ve grown out of them a little, not physically but as far as the style goes. Actually, maybe a little bit of both.
Nia: The trousers definitely stand out don’t they!
Arwel: This shirt is from a 70s second hand shop in Newport. I’d still buy clothes in second hand shops if I saw something. They’re unusual.
Nia: Do you like the idea of wearing something that someone else has worn?
Arwel: I didn’t really think about that when I bought the shirt. I just saw it, it stood out and it’s unique and it’s been washed hasn’t it!
Arwel: The oldest shirt I have – my old school shirt and it still fits!
Arwel: I’ve a velvet shirt too which I love – wearing it gives me a good excuse to be stroked by the ladies!
Arwel: I’d always wanted for years, a biker jacket. When I turned eighteen, my parents bought one for me and I wore it until it was falling apart at the seams but it was stolen in the end, which was a shame because I always used to say that the jacket could’ve told a thousand stories about me if it could talk.
Nia: Arwel is still a fan of leather…
Arwel: This is a coat which was bought for Dr Who but was never worn, so I bought it cheaply at the end of the series.
Nia: This one looks a bit like the coat from the Matrix?
Arwel: Ah, well, this is my Matrix coat. My girlfriend bought it for me two Christmases ago whilst working in Morocco. She asked a gentleman from the local market who was roughly the same build as myself to go to the outfitters and have three fittings so that the coat could be made for me!
Nia: Does it fit perfectly?
Arwel: Nearly, maybe the guy that was kind enough to model for the fittings was just a touch taller than me because it skims the ground. I’ll have to wear Cuban heels with the coat!
Nia: I can’t but notice at all of these watches!
Arwel: This is my uncle’s old coat, which was given to him by an old captain of a ship from Llandwrog. I like things that have a bit of history to them. I’d never wear it though just in case something happened to it.
Arwel: I think it’s true to say about everyone between their teenage years up to their mid-twenties, that you try to discover yourself and your own style. It’s part of the journey about finding out more about yourself. I think I’m closer to that by now.
