Ther isn't one stage in Wales that Audrey Mechell's theatre company has not appeared on. Off stage, her clothes are as dramatic as on stage. One thing that's unique to Audrey is that she won't go near any shops that don't have clothes that match.
Audrey: A lot of people ask me where I buy my clothes, how much I pay for them, how I get clothes that co-ordinate well. The thing is, I'll buy anywhere be it Llangefni market or a market in Spain, I don't really mind. If it catches my eye, I'll never ask how much it is or where it's come from but I will ask myself if it will suit me.
Audrey: I can't understand how people think I spend a lot of money on clothes. I don't. I do own a few items that are in their hundreds but not a lot. Someone came to visit me recently and said that there was a suit in Tesco that would suit me so off I went to buy it.
Audrey: If I wear silver shoes, I have to have a matching bag. Even if I'm just off to Cemmaes, if I'm wearing a brown coat, I must have brown shoes. I'd never wear black shoes then.
Nia: You like denim Audrey?
Audrey: Yes. A number of people of my age wouldn't venture with denim but I will. I always wear jeans.
Audrey: This is my chapel suit. If you're feeling a little low, wear red and you'll be a completely different person! You need to be quite confident to wear red if you're my age, but I will wear red although I know when to give up...probably when I've gone.
Nia: Have you found it difficult to find clothes that are young because you feel young but at the same time finding clothes that suit you and don't give the impression of 'mutton dressed as lamb' so to speak?!
Audrey: I know exactly what you mean! My answer to that would be that when you look in the mirror, it will tell you straight away if you're looking at mutton or lamb. If you've put something on and it's too young for you, you're not going to look good. Don't forget that you're talking to an actress. Remember you're talking to drama. I'll wear nearly anything.
Nia: When you look at this dress now, do you have the feeling that you used to have before going on stage?
Audrey: My first company was 'Cwmni Mechell' and there were eighteen in the company and I played the main part in the play 'Y Ferch o Gefn Ydfa'. This was the dress I made and wore for the part. When I look at it now, I start to think about the good old days and I get a feeling of proudness.
Nia: Do you wear everything you buy?
Audrey: Gosh, no! I don't remember about half of the things I have. Sometimes, I'll come accross blouses that I haven't taken out of the wardrobe since buying them. Oh! That sounds awful but it's true.
Nia: So do you consider yourself a 'shopaholic' then?
Audrey: Definately! The boys took me to Ireland as a 'treat', but I didn't see one shop, only where Oscar Wilde lived and where Molly Malone was. I didn't want to see where Molly and Oscar were, I just wanted to go shopping. What a shame. But I did buy something on the ferry on the way back but I wouldn't say that I really enjoyed that trip.
Audrey: It's unusual for me to come home from a shopping trip without a new pair of shoes. I'll take an empty case with me when I go on holidays so that I can bring them back.
Nia: I've never seen so many shoes in one room in my life! Where do you keep them all?
Audrey: Most of them live in the bottom of the wardrobe. Trying to find two, well, you need to start looking about an hour before you go anywhere. Quite often, you'll only find one but you know that the other is there somewhere. And there's no chance of choosing another pair when you've set your mind on the first ones.
Audrey: I bought a flowery dress once and found some matching shoes in a completely different shop. Because I used to drive a lot in those days, I bought two pairs - one with a covered heel and the other without.
Audrey: I thought these red shoes were lovely when I bought them. I wore them with a red skirt one Saturday. Looking back, maybe I did go a little overboard with the red because my youngest daughter told me "Mum, the Yellow Brick Road is here!" That was the end of the red shoes. But I won't throw them out either.
Nia: What's the secret then? How do you look so young and dress so young but still manage to look so smart at the same time?
Audrey: Well, I'm coming up to my 80th and I look in the mirror sometimes and thank God that I can look like anything by now! I dye my hair, I may as well admit that because I'll never let my hair go white! I've told my hairdresser, if I die that she has to colour my hair before anyone sees me! I think it's also having a particular kind of attitude towards life too as well as either having a flair for clothes or not.
Audrey on clothes...
When I return home having taken clothes to a charity shop, there'll be empty hangers in the wardrobe and you can't have empty hangers can you?!
