Buddug Wyn is a jewellery designer who hails originally from Snowdonia, but has now swapped the fresh mountain air for the bright lights of London. Her style reflects her creative instinct – and she is certainly not one who hides away from experimenting when it comes to style!

What kind of relationship do you have with clothes and how would you describe your style?

My style is quite unique and clothes are a big part of my personality – I like to wear things that are quite wacky. I like to wear frocks and different clothes form different eras, clothes that are fitted and fit my shape. I’m especially fond of the style of the Victorian era. I particularly enjoy shopping in second-hand shops as there’s such a mixture to plough through – it’s as if you’re rummaging through someone else’s wardrobe!

Buddug Wyn

What attracts you to these shops?

I know a lot of people who’d never shop for second-hand clothes, but I like to wear clothes that are different and that make an impression. I like it when you wear something that becomes a topic of conversation. A lot of older people like what I wear, especially when I return to Wales, and when I visit my grandmother she often comments that she likes the textiles I wear.

Your wardrobe and your bedroom are full to the brim of clothes!

I like looking at pretty things and like to see the clothes as they give me ideas of what to wear each day. I swap things around occasionally and put different things out and put other things away if I’ve had enough of them.

This is great – what’s the significance of the label?

A friend of mine, Leonie, made this dress, and gave it to me for my birthday. She always puts her name and the date the garment was completed on the label and likes to experiment with different textiles and cuttings. She likes combining her dresses with my work so it’s always nice to work with friends.

Why did you decide to design jewellery?

I decided to design jewellery because it’s something that’s 3 dimensional and I like to collect small, tactile pieces. Although I love clothes, and enjoy buying them, I find they can be quite flat until you put them on. But with jewellery they comes to life much sooner. I enjoy experimenting with different materials and not being confined to the patterns of dressmaking.

From where do you get your inspiration?

The things that inspire me tend to be things like birds, teapots, cups – I’ve never really thought about it before – but they tend to be things that are Welsh. Maybe, because I live in London, subconsciously the things I miss about my life in Wales inspire the things I design. I also like to wear old thing that have some history to them, the material tends to be of a better quality and feels nicer on the body.

Where did you get this fantastic frock?

I think it’s an old wedding dress petticoat. I’ve only worn it once, and it was to a friend’s birthday. It caused a few laughs when I went to the toilet and couldn’t get into the cubicle!

How do you see your style developing as you get older?

I’ve always experimented with clothes since I was in school, but I think my style will change as I get older but continue in the vein of being striking and a bit different!
