I don't go shopping a lot; I'd rather spend my time making my own clothes. I feel that there is too much waste in the shops, clothes are made quickly in factories where the workers are badly paid.
What's the story behind this skirt?
I bought this material in Patagonia to make a skirt. This petticoat goes underneath the skirt and I've stitched a strip of the material so that you can see it under the skirt. The idea being that you can change the petticoat and pattern. This piece is made from an old pillowcase and I was in the pub one day when someone came up to me and said that they remembered the pattern from their bedcovers as a child.
How has you career in clothes developed?
I did a year and a half of my degree in textile design and the other year and a half in textile art before going to Barcelona to work in a theater on the Ramblas in the costume department. That was great experience. I then went to Finland for a couple of months to do an art residency before then returning to Finland for a six week jewelry scholarship.
This jacket's fantastic.
I bought this jacket at a charity shop and it was too large for me so I sowed some seams in here following the stripe of the jacket so that it would fit me. I've also added some red fabric on the collar to match the button.
Where do you do all your work?
My grandmothers old flat, I've been working here since she passed away. It was quite hard at the beginning but I think that she would be very proud because she used to sew a lot and has everything that you need; all the tools are here with every kind of gadget that you could think of! My grandmother always used to say that she set herself high standards when she was making her own clothes.
Where did you get this cardigan?
I bought it as a scarf from a charity shop and made it into a long sleeved cardigan. When I saw it I thought that it would look much better as a cardigan than a scarf. I feel that the clothes that I make explains who I am and what's my life.
