Claire Jones is a Royal Harpist and the owner of an extensive collection of dresses. Her talent has taken her from West Wales to stages all around the world.
Does your work as the Royal Harpist give you a chance to dress up?
I can't possibly tell you much pleasure I get from being the Prince's harpist. Everyone that knows me knows how much I love dresses, and they go so well with my work with the harp, especially long dresses.
When did your interest in the harp begin?
I think it started when I was about seven years old when I started to play the piano and violin I then went on to play the harp when I was ten. I was accepted to the Royal College on account of my violin playing but then I changed instruments in my second year and chose the harp. It's a good job I did change otherwise my life would have been quite different.
Not many women can claim to have the red dragon on their dress but you can. Was this dress made especially for you?
I had this made for me at Christmas by a company called Galloping Cat from Pembrokeshire for a couple of special occasions that I had coming up. The first occasion was a rugby match between Wales and South Africa at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. For that occasion I had the dress made with a Welsh flag on it. Then, six days later I was playing at the Prince's 60th Birthday at the Opera House in Covent Garden in London. For that occasion I had the dress altered and had the dragon on a gold background to match the gold harp that I played.
Is being allowed to wear long dresses a nice part of you work?
Yes it's wonderful. I love wearing long dresses and I enjoy wearing attention grabbing outfits and grand clothes. I like to wear things that are full of splendour and that are beautiful.
Tell me about this beautiful gold dress.
Salvi, a harp company who are very nice to me leant me this gold dress. They've lent me many dresses and they've also bought me dresses over the years.
Do you like to wear brightly coloured clothes like this red dress?
Salvi bought me this red dress from Selfridges. I love the colour and shape of it, and the shape is very flattering for me. I tend to wear clothes that hug the waist and flows a bit at the bottom so that I have enough room to play the harp. This red colour is perfect and I wear this dress to go to places such as St James' Palace in Windsor.
Tell me more about this black dress.
There's quite a story to this black strapless dress. It's a very special dress as this is what I wore on the night that I was officially made the Royal Harpist. That night I also won a scholarship to the study at the academy, so all in all, it was quite a good night!
Now that you've completed you post-graduate degree at the royal Academy, and from now on will be performing professionally, does that mean that you'll be allowed to wear even more gorgeous dresses like this blue one?
There are a few things I like about this dress - I love the colour, and I wore this dress when I met Price William. The blue goes with the colour of my eyes and I think it stands out next to the harp. Something else I like about this dress is its shape. It has a trail on the skirt that lies perfectly in a puddle on stage when I play the harp. The blue of the dress also goes nicely with the brooch that I was given by the Prince, which is the brooch that gets passed from one Royal Harpist to the next.
It's quite a change of scenery for a young girl from Crymych to come to the city. Do you enjoy living in London?
It's six years since I moved to London and I'm really enjoying it now. There's quite a difference between Crymych and London, but I'm very happy here. I do go home quite a lot to see my mum, dad and the rest of the family, but I have to admit that I do like the fact that everything is on your doorstep here.
Has your style changed a lot since coming to London?
I think as time's gone by that I've become more experimental with my style, especially when it comes to performing in front of a large audience at somewhere like the Faenol. Because these places are so big, you tend to want to dress big so that everyone can see you.
Is there a particular clothes designer that you like?
I'm a big fan of Desigual which comes from Spain. The clothes are colourful and have big prints on them and I often wear them when I'm not performing. They are the complete opposite to what I wear on stage. To think of the grandeur of some of the clothes I wear when I perform, away from the stage I tend to dress the opposite.
What does the future have in store for you?
The Prince wrote me a letter last week asking if I'd remain his harpist for the next two or so years. It's a huge honour and I'm looking forward to it as well being able to wear more amazing dresses of course!
