Craig Evans from Llantrisant runs a hip-hop and elctro label. Here we see how a person’s love for music, and the particular style that goes with that music, influences someone’s personal style.

Craig Evans

What kind of reaction do you get to your style?

People in Wales don’t like it if you look too different or unique. People laugh if you’re not wearing a rugby top and the right shoes.

Craig Evans

I know you’re really into your music. So to what extent does the music you like influence your style?

I started my own label called Skipping Beats, a hip-hop and electro label, and the style that goes with that kind of music is hats, trainers, baggy jeans and lots of jackets and accessories. I buy a lot off the internet, and I like labels like Stussy, Bathing Ape, The Hundreds – they’re quite unique. There’s a US website I go to quite often and they have this thing called the ‘daily dig’, where they let you know what’s come in. I’m not going to say what the website’s called because then everyone starts wearing the same thing and I don’t want that!

Craig Evans

Do you wear these trainers, or do you just keep them to look at?

I do wear them, but they should be on a shelf somewhere because their value’s going up on a daily basis. This pair of Nike Heinekens I bought for about £90, but I could sell them on Ebay now for about £400. The reason they’re so expensive is that Heineken complained that Nike had used the red star, so Nike had to take the whole batch off the shelves and now they’re collector’s items. It’s the same with these ‘blue ribbons’, Blue Ribbon is a beer company from the USA, and these were also taken off the shelf because Nike had used the logo without permission. If these were boxed and unworn they’d cost about £300, but because I’ve worn them to death I don’t think they’d be worth much!

I know you like your caps, how many do you have? And what’s the difference between a baseball cap and a trucker hat?

I’ve got over 30 hats. Trucker hats have a mesh and a front foam, and baseball caps are more like a wrap, without a mesh. The first hat I bought was this Miami Mice one – I bought it when I was six years old in 1988. Then I went to see this band called Grandaddy, and they all wore trucker hats. So I dug into my wardrobe to find this old hat and started wearing it again.

Craig Evans

Yes, I always wear it on this side. I’ve tried it on the other side and it didn’t feel right at all! The two hats are by The Hundreds – and I have a pair of jeans with the same motif. I like the little details.

Here’s something I never wear – it’s more like a piece of art to me – it’s by Peter Fowler with One True Saxon. Peter Fowler does the Super Furries’ artwork, and he’s one of my heroes. I like everything he does – from designing monsters to urban vinyl.

Craig Evans

What’s urban vinyl?

Some people describe them as toys, but to me they’re more like sculptures by artists such as Peter Fowler, Joe Ledbetter and James Jarvis. They’re all famous for making these kinds of toys. Here’s a Leon toy which goes with the trainers, you get it free when you buy the trainers. Or you can buy them on Ebay, but then they cost a bit more.

Craig Evans

Amongst your jackets I can see some Adidas ones which are quite old school. One in particular you keep in the box – what’s the story behind this one?

The company Toy2R, which is an urban vinyl company, got together with Adidas and created this jacket. A toy came with the jacket too. The Toy2R logo is on the jacket, as well as the Adidas logo.

Craig Evans

You obviously respect your clothes, and look after them...

Yeah, I do. They’re like works of art, and you wouldn’t leave a painting on the floor, would you? I’m like a canvas and I wear other people’s artwork. So I like to keep them tidy in their boxes.
