Cynan Llwyd is a student that lets his interest in music dictate his style.
How would you describe your style?
I'm quite a confident and striking person so my clothes needs to reflect that. Sometimes when I'm in Aberystwyth I'll get some digs about they way I dress because it's different, but I figure that they're the ones with the problem and not me. I read a lot of music magazines like NME and Q, from them I'll take ideas from people like the Claxons or MIA who's a girl but that has a really cool sense of style and I'll mix it with my own style. In the sixth form common room there's also a lot of Vogues and Glamour magazines and stuff like that so I look at styles from everywhere.
Where did you get this colourful hoodie?
There's quite a funny story about this top. I got it after my dad phoned me from London one day and said, "Cynan, I'm in H&M, do you want anything?" and I said, "Thanks dad, erm, can you buy me something new rave please?" Now, this was a test to see how fashionable my dad was and to see if he knew what new rave meant. And so he came home with this new rave top, so congratulations to him, he passed the test!
Do you think that he asked someone that worked in the shop for help?
Probably. My dad is quite cool, but I don't think he's cool enough to know what new rave means!
Is music an inspiration to the way you dress?
Yes definitely, but only subconsciously. Say if I'm getting ready to go out and I'm listening to some pop music, like Diffiniad or rock like Mattoidz, then that music will influence what I'm wearing. If I'm listening to pop I'll wear something colourful, but if I'm listening to something a little more indie, that I'll tone it down a bit.
This hat is fantastic, where did you get this from?
I found this hat i the mud at Wakestock last year. I didn't even know what colour it was until I got it home and washed it. It's quite gangster isn't it! I hope that a gangster's not going to come knocking on my door wanting it back now!
You also like scarves as well don't you?
Yes I do like scarves, especially ones like these because they're big but light so that you can wear them in the summer or in the winter. If you're cold at a festival you can use it as a blanket, or you can use it as a picnic blanket if it's warm – you can use it for everything!
Are you a musician yourself?
I was the lead singer in three different band; Kenavo, Java, and Sleifar a'r teulu, which were hip hop bands, so on stage it was important for me to stand out from the crowd in the way I dressed. Wearing bright, colourful and patterned clothes was one way of doing it.
You have a lot of colourful t-shirts. Tell me a little more about them.
This is a Castell Rock t-shirt, which is an annual music festival that takes place in the castle in Aberystwyth.
This t-shirt means a lot to me because it's a Manna t-shirt. Manna is a Christian band that my friends are in. I wore this when I sang with Sleifar a'r teulu on stage at Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau just before the Super Furry Animals came on stage, so it means a lot to me. I got it for free on the condition that I wore it on stage.
Tell me about your hairstyle – it's so cool!
It's quite an 80's style, well that's the feedback that I've been having so far. It's taken quite a while to get to this stage, but I think that this is the finished article now.
So it's naturally curly?
Yes it is naturally curly and because I have it short on the sides and at the back, the top looks like a wave of hair flowing to the side! I use a diffuser in the morning with moose, wax and some hairspray... I sound quite feminine don't I? Now that's not good!
People associate university years with developing and experiencing different things. Do you think you'll be more experimental with your style when you go to university?
Aberystwyth is hardly the fashion capital of the world, but I stand out there. Last week I went to London and I didn't stand out at all. Maybe in Cardiff I'll have to step it up a notch and be even more over the top, and I think I'm ready for that!
