An actress once said, “It’s the shoes. If I’ve got the right shoes then that’s the character developed.” With me it was the cheque, if that was fine then I could act! Clothes are important and that’s where the costume and wardrobe department come in, they’re very important to me because I don’t have any sense of style whatsoever!

Everybody loved the Ricky Hoyw character, but I hated playing the part. He was so naff! That was the whole purpose of course, the naffness of his white suit and his sideburns – I hated wearing the glue that held the sideburns on and I also hated wearing the wig!

Do you follow fashion?

To me, clothes are something I wear to keep warm or hide my private parts!

This looks nice and cosy!

It’s like wearing a sleeping bag! This jacket is worth about £400, but I got it for £60. I never wear it because it’s too hot. It was even too hot to wear in the Arctic!

You’re well known for wearing lots of hats!

This is a very special hat from Brittany, and it was given to me by Bryn Fôn. Bryn Fôn has touched this hat! I’m going to sell it on the internet and make thousands of pounds! I bring back a lot of things from travelling abroad on ‘Byd Pws’. I bought this Ninja hat from Japan! The clothes are like postcards from the places I’ve been.

Where did this come from?

This is a very special scarf. I had this when I went to do the Kumbha Mela in India where about 9 or 10 million people go to wash themselves in the Ganga and this was in the river. The Dalai Lama was there to meet all the Hindus and he was standing about ten feet away from me. He was surrounded by men with guns guarding him. He’s such a nice man and one of my heroes. He singled me out and whispered – ‘Scarlets for the cup!’

Where did you get this jacket?

This came from Mongolia and everyone there wears them. They tie them loosely around their waist and then they carry food in the top before tightening the belt to keep it in place. They look so fat, but it’s just the food in the pouch making them look fat!

These shoes look interesting...

These are leather shoes and the soles are made out of old car tyres. I bought them in Morocco and thought that red would be a good, manly colour. But the men over there wear yellow and it’s the women that wear red!

This looks like it’s seen better days...

This is full of holes and falling to pieces, but it’s my favourite scarf and it’s been all around the world with me. I also like it because you always see war correspondents on the television wearing a scarf like this.

When do you wear these smart clothes?

When I started to play golf I realised that there was a lot of fuss over what you should wear – ‘gentlemen must dress for dinner’ and all that! So I bought a blazer and suit. By now I’ve also got this tie, a ‘hole in one’ tie. When you get a hole in one in golf, you have to have witnesses to sign your card and then you can send off for one of these – I have three so far!

Do you think your style will ever change?

When I was teaching I had to wear a shirt and tie or a suit and I hated wearing them, I was never comfortable. So now that I’m nearly 60 I can’t see me changing, I’m comfortable in my t-shirt and down jacket.
