Hats are Edna Griffiths's delight and she's been designing them for 8 years now.

I remember having a hat from Father Christmas when I was little and remember thinking 'I look tops in this' and I've been quite fond of it and has stayed in my memory eversince.

Nia: What's the appeal of hats to you?

Edna: The styles, colours, what they go with, the weather - things like that.

Nia: How often do you wear a hat?

Edna: Well, in the Winter, I always wear a hat around Brithdir, always.

Edna: The first hat I made was a pink and black cloche one. Cloche is a hat that covers the ears and cheeks and goes up above the eyes - it's 1920s in style.

Nia: What do you call this hat's material?

Edna: Simine which is a material that's been made out of banana wood. Well, the banana family - Avoca, the Avoca wood from the Philippines.

Nia: These look completely different to most of your other hats don't they?

Edna: Yes, the technical name for them is 'fascinators'. They're a little more sculptural.

Nia: Wow, this one's amazing! It's like something you want to hang on your wall because it's so pretty.

Edna: Yes, I like this one. Crin is the material I've used to make it which is similar to plastic.

Nia: Wow, a black and white hat.

Edna: Yes, a classic. It's really comfortable. You wear it by pressing down with your fingers on the hat band and not on top of the hat. I wanted to make a hat for my daughter's wedding and this was the result.

Edna on hats...
I sell my hats around Gwynedd and Powis and one's even gone to Greece. If anyone would like a hat, they're welcome to contact me!
