Erin Richards stands out in a crowd without any effort. The secret to Mosgito's presenter from Penarth's style it to follow her instincts instead of fashion and at the moment it's clothes from the 80s that take pride of place in her wardrobe.
How would you describe your style?
I don't really think of myself as a glam person and I don't want to stand out as being catwalk glam. I like to dress down and stand out for being individual and unique and wearing something that no one has seen before. I don't like the fashion world, the way everything turns over so quickly. I try to shop at second hand or vintage shops. At the moment I'm inspired by the 80s as a way to stand out.
Do you like second hand clothes because they're unique or is it more to do with your principles?
A little bit of both I suppose. With the environment I believe it's best to buy something that's 30 or 40 years old which means that they weren't made to be disposable, I buy clothes that are made to last.
What kind of clothes do you wear every day?
I usually wear a check shirt with something like a t-shirt and a pair of jeans in the daytime or to go to a gig at night because it's just something simple to wear.
This was something that was quite fashionable at the beginning of the summer with its nautical theme. I'd wear this with a pair of red trousers.
I wear this a lot in the summer because it's light and I think it's beautiful and quite unusual. I bought it in a second hand shop in France. I find amazing things in second hand shops abroad – things you'd never see over here.
Where does your interest in style and fashion come from?
I think it started when I discovered who I was as a person. When you're at school you don't think you know who you are and what you like at all because there are so many things going on. When you're 15, 16 or 17 years old, you're just a mess! After finishing my A Levels I went travelling, I don't want to say that I ‘found myself', but I did learn a lot about who I was and what I like, it also made me more confident in myself and in what I liked.
I think that there's a knack to putting together an outfit. With what would you wear this dress?
I usually wear this dress with a yellow vest underneath and leopard print tights, but the tights are more grey than leopard coloured! And I'd wear it with a butterfly belt – I wear this belt with everything!
What kind of things influences your style?
I go to a lot of gigs and festivals and I also go out with my friends from College in Sheffield. There's a hippie vibe in Sheffield and electronic music is also popular there, so I think a lot of that inspires me to dress a little crazy!
The 80s are an obvious influence on your wardrobe and this dress looks like its come straight from that decade!
Unfortunately I ripped this dress at a festival, so I'll need to get it mended. I've found this wonderful place in Cardiff where an old lady ads touches to my clothes and mends things for me.
This dress is amazing. I could never get away with wearing something like this!
I get a lot of dresses altered or I alter them myself. With this dress I saw it and thought that I had to have it. It was only £20! I'd wear this to a festival or out in London, somewhere really special and I'd give myself a massive hairdo just to make it obvious that I was having fun and not taking things too seriously. When I wear it I hike it up so that it's a mini skirt and I wear it with a belt around my waist.
Many people believe that the 80s was a terrible fashion era, what attracts you to clothes from that decade?
After a period has ended, for example, now we look back at the 90s and think, what on earth were we thinking? I can't even think of what would stand out in the 90s, what kind of style did we wear then? But I think that happens every ten years or so. Every time we look back, like in the 90s, enough time had laps since the 70s for us to think that the 70s style was great – because the 80s was in the middle we just thought, urgh, what happened in the 80s? But, by now we have the 90s as a cushion and we can say ‘wow' to the style of the 80s!
This rara dress looks very 80s as well!
I love the way that everything in the 80s clashed and I thought the big hair was cool. I also think it was a great era for women. I've only just bought this dress. Autumn/Winter 2008 has a lot of black so this dress is great, and I also love the pink under the frill. I might buy some netting to fluff up the frill a little. But I love this dress and it was half price - so it was a bargain!
What's made you feel the need to dress differently?
I want to be strong and different as a woman. I don't want men to look at me and think that I look nice; I'd rather have women think that I look great. I really like it when girls come up to me and say, "I really like your dress, where did you get it from?" I think it's a great way for similar people to get together and talk. If a girl I didn't know came up to me asking where I'd bought my dress and I'd tell her Oxfam or somewhere like that then it would give me a chance to talk to people that are interested in the same kind of style that I am. I just think it's something really nice.
Do you think your style will change at all?
Since working on Mosgito I've started to take more interest in fashion, what's on the runways and catwalk, different colours and things. I've spent more money this year on clothes because when I was at university I didn't have any money! I know now where I like to go shopping and it feels like everything's come together in the past year and I'm now happy with the clothes I own.
