Gabrielle Kelly, originally from Aberarth, runs the gallery and restaurant Milgi yn Cardiff.
Describe your style.
I’m always mixing things up. If I find something I like, I buy it, but I don’t have one particular style like fifties or twenties – I like to take a bit of everything, put it all together and see what happens.
How did a girl from Aberarth come to be running a place like Milgi?
I was born in Aberarth and lived there with my mum and dad and my sister. Then I went to university in Nottingham to study art and made a fine art video.
What did you do after leaving university?
After graduating, my sister and I moved in together and then decided to go to New York. I did a lot of shopping there, going around flea markets. I met loads of people, hung out in the bars and cafes and generally had a really good time.
How have the experiences you had in New York shaped what has happened to you since?
I met two friends who were doing the same as us, and they had a boutique which turned into a bar and club in the evening. I though it was such a simple idea and it really worked. My sister and I just came up with it one night after getting back to Aberarth, and a year later here we are!
Do you like dressing up?
Yes I do. I don’t dress extravagantly every day, but when I get up in the morning, I think about what I’m going to wear, it comes naturally.
Are you comfortable about who you are in terms of your style?
Yes. It’s taken some time but I find myself going back to things I used to wear when I was younger. Looking back, my style hasn’t changed that much, but I’ve been through lots of different styles to get to where I am now.
What pleasure does it give you to see that little dress hanging on the wall?
Well, I found that in a little shop in Aberystwyth, and I was looking for something to go out in. I wanted something a bit different and I think I only paid £4 for it.
Have you got more clothes from New York here?
Well, I bought a lot of clothes out there, but I found this pink dress in a flea market in the East Village. It had been stuffed into a black bag and I tumbled into it and found this. I’ve never worn it anywhere, but it’s so stunning and when you put it on, you just look like a fairytale.
Do you like the idea of recycling clothes for environmental reasons?
I just buy things that are more interesting than the stuff you find in the shops these days really. Everything looks the same when you go into shops on the high street. If you go into a little boutique or a second–hand shop, you can get a real bargain.
