Gethin Jones is a presenter on Blue Peter. "I never dreamed I’d be a presenter, I never thought I would be on the telly. When I was growing up, I thought that the television was this magic box in the corner!"
What do clothes mean to you – have you kept lots of things which have special memories?
Yes, I’m really bad at throwing things out, sometimes you have to, but you love them because they’ve got a special logo or something on them, and there’s a story behind it. As you’ll see, my cupboard is full of rubbish things but it’s so hard to throw them out. Unfortunately I don’t actually have a cupboard because I’ve only just moved into the house, I don’t even have any furniture yet, but I do have a cupboard of sorts – I call it the dumping room, with all my work clothes and then I have a rail in the bedroom for the weekend, well, the weekend I have off work.
Do you get loads of free clothes?
Sometimes..training stuff, because i have to do lots of physical filming, physical exercise and stuff.
Youre Blue Peters Action Man arent you?
I’ve got that title from somewhere, I don’t know why, I’m not an adrenalin junkie by any means, but I do enjoy the challenge, especially physically, to see if I can do it or not. Obviously we do stupid stuff too. I have these cowboy shirts from when we went to Texas, look at the back!
Can I ask why you had to dress up as a cowboy?
We always go on a summer trip with Blue Peter, and it was the southern states of America this time. We also filmed at NASA, in the Space camp, and I landed the space shuttle from 50,000 feet – in a simulator of course. Because I’ve got a pilot’s licence, they asked me if I wanted a go, and I did it – I landed everyone safely and everyone would have survived! That was an amazing day in the Space center. Look, my name’s on the suit and everything.
Was your image important to you when you were younger?
I think I have to say ‘No’ to that one, maybe my friends would disagree, but my mother cut my hair, I had a big pair of specs like jam jars, braces on my teeth and I played the violin so I wasn’t exactly number one on the list of the prettiest girls in the school!
I remember over the summer, I got contact lenses, I got the braces off and cut my hair and I started doing weights, dad had bought some weights and put them in the garage. So I cam back to school and I remember Mrs Williams turning around to me and saying ‘Sorry, can I help you?’ when I came in on the first day of term. That was pretty odd, but I probably looked a little different!
Do you have a favourite shirt?
This is my favourite. Every man has his favourite, if they say no then they’re lying. I always take it away with me, on a work trip or with friends, just in case I need a smart shirt for something. But you don’t like it, I can tell!
Let me see your suits...
I bought a suit. I thought, you know what, my sister’s getting married, it’s time to buy a suit. I had it made, you know, when they make it up for you. Smart?
Do you always feel pressure to look good Gethin?
I think it’s important to look good on camera, especially on a kids’ programme. If I was meeting someone or going out, I would always try to wear something smart. I think that dressing smartly or what you wear is important in respecting the person you’re with. Dad used to always say that. Just as a matter of self-respect more than anything, wearing what you want to wear, thats important – that’s how I am from day to day and that’s how I am on camera.
