Mum told me as a child that if I had a new item of clothing, that I had to wear it straight away so I still do the same. I'm too excited to wait before I wear something new.
Glyn: It might be quite difficult to believe, seeing that there are so many mirrors in this house, that I hardly ever look in them. I'm more likely to look in a mirror when I'm out somewhere.
Nia: You have rather bright, colourful and mad shirts. How do you choose what to wear?
Glyn: It's difficult! A lot of my suits are dark so I tend to go for dark shirts too.
Nia: All of your hats are the same style aren't they?!
Glyn: Quite a lot of them are similar in shape, yes. Thing is, seeing as the shape suits me, it's just easier to buy that shape in different colours and patterns then.
Nia: What kind of a response do you get when you wear the hat that states 'Whip me, beat me, bite me'?!
Glyn: People tend to come up quite closely to me to try to read it and then they start stepping back slowly!
Glyn: You can more or less know what kind of person someone is by just looking at their clothes. Clothes are a shortcut to find out if you're going to enjoy someone's company or not. Clothes are an advert about your character and that's what everybody does whether they are aware of it or not. Even when shy or quiet people where clothes that are 'quiet', they're not in fact quiet because they are shouting at exactly the same level as other people, but a different message that they don't want to be the centre of attention maybe.
Nia: Do you remember experimenting a lot with clothes during your teenage years?
Glyn: Oh yes! I started out thinking I'd quite like to be a hippy just like a lot of teenagers do. I went through a stage of dressing like someone out of a silent film wearing pinstripe suits and spats for example. When I used to go clubbing with my friends, to birthday parties maybe, I used to turn up in a top hat, tails and white bowtie - you shouldn't wear a black bow tie in mixed company - black in male company only and white if ladies are present.
Nia: I've never met a man that's been a bridesmaid before! The big question is what did you wear?
Glyn: The first time, I wore a suit just like the other men but the second time I wore a white dinner jacket with a black shirt and no tie. There were female bridesmaids there too but I was the chief bridesmaid!
Nia: You had a suit on your 18th birthday didn't you?
Glyn: Yes, the Charlston. I had the full suit, tie, shoes, spats, cufflinks and an old fashioned shirt without the collars so I had to have them too. And I had a big coat and co-ordinating scarf to go with the suit. The suit was tailor made in 1929. The way it's been done is fantastic and is just like a suit of armour to wear - it's heavy and keeps everything in place as it should, and I feel just that little bit taller when I wear it.
Nia: Do you have some kind of philosophy about clothes? Maybe some rule that you have to keep to?
Glyn: Yes. One thing that bothers me is that people wear something just because it's fashionable but it doesn't suit them at all. I think it's much better to know what suits you exactly and to be ruthless in being able to look at yourself, step back and admit yes it's lovely, it's fashionable but it doesn't suit me. You see so many people in clothes that just donn't suit them and you just want to rip the clothes off them and say No! you can't wear that, you look awful!
Nia: Do you feel like some kind of superhero from a comic in some of your clothes?
Glyn: Well, the only thing about Superman is you know he wears pants!
Nia: Are you going to allow me to have a peep or might it be better for me not to?!
Glyn: Well, no. Anyway, in this gusty weather it won't be long until everyone will be able to see what goes on under this skirt!
Glyn: Over time, I got bored with wearing trousers and jeans everyday. So, I was just fed up and the only thing I thought I could get away with as a man that was a little different was a kilt. I didn't think they were that unusual at the time to be honest.
Nia: But leather ones?!
Glyn: Well, ok, leather ones may be a little unusual, I have to admit. I've been really comfortable in them from the first day I put one on, so I carried on to wear them and wear a kilt on most days by now
Nia: How do you decide which shoes to wear with your kilt then?
Glyn: That can be quite difficult. There's no point wearing trainers because they'll just look od, you need something chunkier than that. These shoes are quite big, are heavy and clumpy and because the socks are quite thick, there's no point in wearing smaller shoes than these in all honesty.
Glyn: I hope I know myself well enough, I think that's really important for anyone's self confidence. I think I'm quite confident. I have more of a personal style rather than being a follower of fashion. I'm more consistent than fashion.
