Gwen Siôn works for a public relations company and has recently moved from Cardiff to Cwm y Glo. As a young girl she was a ballerina, and the influence is still apparent in her wardrobe now.

What has influenced your style?

I used to dance a lot until I was 18, and my dancing costumes have influenced a lot on what I wear now. I like my clothes to fit properly and I also like different fabrics like stain, silk and netting. They all catch my eye when I’m out shopping, I like the silhouette they create.

When you’re in a dance studio, you have to constantly look at yourself in the mirror, and I think that, even though I’m quite shy, I’m confident when I have to look at myself because I’ve been doing it for years through dancing. You have to check that your arms are in the right position. Once you put those dancing shoes on, you escape into a whole other world which is a nice place to be.

I have never seen so many copies of Vogue, have you always read them and been aware of fashion?

For me Vogue is the fashion Bible, the starting point from where you can adapt everything to the high street. I think my style is quite simple. Because I’m petite I like to wear clothes that fit me properly. I don’t wear a lot of patterns and I wear colours in blocks. I also wear a lot of dresses when I go out and would always choose a dress before anything else.

Gwen Sion

Do you believe that you’ve had to adapt or compromise your style since you left the city to come and live in the country?

No, not at all. That may sound odd because I live in the middle of the countryside but I don’t see it like that. Even though I live in such a wild environment there is so much beauty here and the landscape is so nice it feels the same. The clothes I wear, even though they are quite glamorous and I don’t get a chance to wear them as much here, I’m not the type of person to put them all in a black bag and wear jeans all the time because I haven’t changed, I still want to look the same. I don’t really pay that much attention to what other people think anyway.

Gwen Sion

What is your style?

I think that I’m starting now to feel comfortable in my style. I’ve given in to the fact that I’m a girlie-girl who likes feminine clothes and I don’t try and fight that anymore. I like fabrics such as satin and silk and I love cashmere and the way it feels, to me clothes have to feel and fit as good as they look.

You have a variety of different colours here and this blue looks great with your eyes.

This isn’t a colour that I would normally go for, but when I tried it on I loved the blue so I bought it to wear to a friend’s wedding.

This is an amazing dress.

This is something that Sarah Jessica Parker or someone similar would wear isn’t it? This dress brings back a lot of happy memories for me because I wore it on my hen night when I got married recently, and I’ve also worn it to a few of my friends weddings. This is a ‘good time’ dress. I knew when I bought it that this would be a fun dress. How can you not have fun in a dress like this? I hope that this will always be a happy dress for me.

Gwen Sion

Are you expected to dress in a certain way for your work?

I think it’s very interesting the way people dress for work. We don’t have a dress code in the office, but I feel a lot more confident and ‘in the zone’ if I dress smartly. It’s an industry that obviously deals a lot with image so first impressions really count. Since I graduated I believe that you should dress for the job you want and not the job you have. It shows that you take your career seriously and hopefully it’s a way of aiming higher.

The shape of this dress reminds me of the 1950s.

I think the 1950s style suits my shape. If you are petite you have to be careful to wear clothes that fits you properly, otherwise they swamp you. With this dress there’s this detail at the top and then it falls from the waist. Again, it’s not a colour I would normally choose, but I think it works well here.

Gwen Sion

You also have quite a few clothes with polka dots on them.

Again I think this is the 1950s influence, polka dots isn’t a busy pattern it’s just an extra detail that works with other colours.

What do clothes mean to you?

I don’t think that I’m obsessed with clothes... I do have some sort of perspective and I know that clothes are just clothes, but I do believe that they enrich your life. I believe that if clothes can add to your life then it’s important to indulge that. Some people may believe that I dress up a bit too much but if it makes me happy then I’m going to keep on doing it. Give me a couple of years and I might change my mind, but for now I’m going to stay in my fancy clothes, if that’s okay.
