Gwilym on growing up...

I lived in a small village called and there was a carnival every year, you know 'best dressed' and stuff like that. So when I was about eight or nine I asked a the girl next door to go with me, if we could go as a pair, and we went as 'a couple at Ascot', and she wore the suit and I wore the dress! I think it was the attention I enjoyed more than anything else...

Were there times, especially when you were growing up, when people's attitudes were narrower?

Oh yes, all the time. People would shout things and call me names, but the more they shouted the worse I got, I went even more outrageous. In the end, they let me be. I had a friends, everyone thought we were partners but we weren't, we shared a house and he liked getting dressed up as well. We used to go down to Cardiff or Swansea or up to Manchester all glammed up and go around the clubs, it was good fun, we had a whale of a time.

Gwilym you're very tall aren't you, how do you find dresses big enough? Do you have to buy them from somewhere special?

I find them, don't worry about me! Well. There's a woman I know in town and she used to go on these cruises you know? Well, she only wore them once or twice. I had to put this netting on the bottom because it wasn't quite long enough for me.

Gwilym on his own personal style and other people's opinions...

Lots of people worry about what mum and dad will say, and what Mrs Jones next door will say, but you don't have to, if you're happy inside, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, family or whoever, it's your life not your family's or Mrs Jones', so do what you want, and as long as you don't hurt anyone carry on that's what I say because I've had people beat me up and not understanding homosexuality and dressing like this but the more they did that the worse I got and I think by now I've been through the worst of it - so, live your life, you only get one chance after all."
