What did you wear at your previous work?
I worked in Local Government for Swansea City Council. It was very easy to decide what to wear, usually it would be a shirt and tie, there wasn't a need for a suit as it wasn't very formal. Every now again I'd wear a suit, but usually a shirt and tie would do the trick.
What does your new job entail?
I'm going to be the new co-ordinating officer for the Children's Commissioner in Wales. So in a way, I'll be promoting the needs and protecting the rights of children and young people in Wales within the political system. I'll be conversing with politicians, policy makers and civil servants.
Do you dress differently when you go and meet children and young people? Do you find that you have to dress formally and informally at different times?
Yes. It's the children and the young people who feed and steer the work the Commissioner does and influences his priorities. They've told me that they want the office to be accessible and not a formal place where people wear suits as it creates a barrier. So, I'll have to have a dual wardrobe in a way.
Eleanor Gardener: Do you enjoy shopping?
I don't mind it, but as far as buying work clothes go, I'm not keen on spending too much on them because I feel I've got better things to spend my money on. I'm also quite an indecisive person, and not very sure when it comes to stepping outside my comfort zone.
Eleanor: Do find it difficult to find clothes that fit you properly?
Yes. It tends to be a bit hit and miss and depends a lot on the brands, company or certain shop.
Eleanor: Gwion has quite a small frame – and there isn't as much choice for short men. It's difficult to find jackets that fit well. Gwion has a triangle body shape – broad shoulders and a slim waist.
Eleanor: A lot of Gwion's clothes have aged and there aren't many smart clothes in his wardrobe. He has a few jumpers from Tesco, that aren't the best quality, shirts that look a bit tatty, not much in the way of smart shirts and not one blazer!
Gwion has a good group of friends and boys tend to follow their friends in what they wear. People tend to do this, as they feel safer in the crowd. I think it's time for Gwion to break away and start developing his own style.
Eleanor: I like this colour, the charcoal looks great on Gwion! The suit is slim-fitted and shows-off his body shape and the length of the jacket is shorter so it makes the legs look longer. The trousers are flat fronted, which are the best style for Gwion as a pleat would make his legs look bigger rather than longer.
Nia: Eleanor, what would be your top-tips for men who want to improve their image to match their status?
Eleanor:
- Choose shirts that are a similar colour to your tie
- To look taller, wear the same colour on the top and on the bottom
- Brown shoes, brown belt. Black shoes, black belt
- Organize your wardrobe – an organized wardrobe means an organized life!
Nia: How did you find the whole experience of having Eleanor telling you what to wear?
I was surprised that Eleanor was so honest! But I think it was important that she was able to be honest with me, so I could then be honest with her. At the end of the day, she is right, and she has made me face some uncomfortable truths that maybe I need to grow up. I can improve my style, but I think it's going to be a case of one step at a time and getting used to the ideas she's given me. I'm afraid it's going to be a process and not a single event!
